Curvilinear

« Back to Glossary Index

The term "curvilinear" refers to shapes, forms, or lines that are smoothly curved rather than straight or angular. In architecture and design, curvilinear elements are characterized by flowing, organic lines that often mimic natural forms, creating a sense of movement, softness, and fluidity in a space or structure.

In residential architecture, curvilinear design might be seen in:

  • Winding pathways or driveways
  • Rounded walls or corners
  • Arched windows or doorways
  • Free-form rooflines or facades

Curvilinear forms are often used to contrast with rigid, rectilinear structures, adding visual interest and a more natural, harmonious aesthetic.
