Feng Shui

Feng shui is a Chinese practice of arranging buildings and spaces to harmonise the flow of energy, or qi, through orientation, layout and the placement of elements.

Feng shui addresses how a building sits in its landscape and how movement, light and air pass through it. Principles cover the position and approach of the entry, the relationship between rooms, the placement of stairs, and the balance of the five elements within a space.

A number of its practical conclusions align closely with contemporary design thinking: orient to capture beneficial light, avoid long unbroken circulation, provide a clear and welcoming arrival, and keep sleeping areas protected and calm.

Where a client follows feng shui, it is most efficiently incorporated at concept stage. Orientation, entry position and the location of the stair are difficult to revisit once the plan is resolved.
