Finish

« Back to Glossary Index

In architecture and construction, the term "Finish" refers to the final surface treatment or coating applied to a material or element of a building to achieve a desired appearance, texture, or level of protection. Finishes can be applied to both interior and exterior surfaces and may include paint, stain, plaster, tiles, timber veneers, polished concrete, or other decorative or protective coatings.

Finishes serve both aesthetic and functional purposes, such as:

  • Enhancing the visual appeal of a space or surface
  • Protecting materials from wear, moisture, UV exposure, or corrosion
  • Influencing the tactile feel or acoustic properties of a surface

Examples of finishes in residential architecture include:

  • Wall finishes: paint, wallpaper, render, or cladding
  • Floor finishes: timber flooring, carpet, tiles, or polished concrete
  • Ceiling finishes: plasterboard with paint, timber battens, or acoustic panels
  • Joinery finishes: laminate, polyurethane, or timber veneer

The selection of finishes is a key part of the architectural design process, as it contributes significantly to the overall look, feel, and performance of a home.
