Hue
Hue is the pure colour attribute of a surface, its position on the colour wheel, independent of how light, dark or saturated it is.
Colour is commonly described by three properties. Hue is the colour family itself, such as red, blue or green. Value or tone is how light or dark it is. Saturation or chroma is how intense or muted it is.
Separating these makes colour selection far more controllable. Two paints can share the same hue while one reads as a warm off-white and the other as a strong feature colour, purely through differences in value and saturation.
In interiors, hue is best assessed on site rather than from a chip, because light changes it. A north-facing room receives warm light for much of the day, while a south-facing room stays cooler and will render the same colour differently.
