J-Box

« Back to Glossary Index

A J-Box, short for Junction Box, is an enclosure used in electrical systems to house and protect wire connections. It serves as a central point where electrical wires are joined together, allowing for safe distribution of power and easy access for maintenance or future modifications.

In residential architecture, particularly in Australia, a J-Box is typically made of metal or plastic and is installed behind walls, ceilings, or under floors. It helps:

  • Prevent electrical fires by containing sparks or heat from loose connections.
  • Protect wires from physical damage.
  • Ensure compliance with Australian electrical standards (such as AS/NZS 3000 – Wiring Rules).
  • Facilitate inspections and repairs by providing a clear access point to wiring junctions.

All connections within a J-Box must be properly secured and covered with an approved lid, and the box must remain accessible (not permanently concealed) to comply with building codes.
