Brighton Le Sands

The site is located in Sydney on a narrow property with a pedestrian laneway to the north. The contemporary house takes the form of simple, proportioned 4 m by 8 m volumes arranged around a central atrium, with a precise total building footprint of 9 m by 24 m. Each volume contains the necessary living functions of the house, with every space strategically located, while the atrium serves as the focal point of the plan, providing a tranquil space to calm the mind.

Upon entry, a narrow corridor of light is created by the gaps between the main volumes, which engage with the street. The skylight glazing between the volumes is performance glass with two layers, creating an air gap that captures heat and releases it via a high vent (a trombe wall). The glazing above is also equipped with a motor-controlled cable sliding awning for solar protection.

The central atrium features a roof opening (compluvium) that allows water to fall into a corresponding pool of water (impluvium). Both are essential for natural light, ventilation, and a controlled natural cooling effect, achieved through an operable glass louvre system surrounding the impluvium. This concept also allows excess water to be used for services and gardens.

The design is further enhanced by a pool situated to the north of the building's edge. To optimise functionality and solar access, the living spaces are positioned to the north while the service areas are located to the south. Bridge links encircling the atrium connect the four volumes above, providing spaces for sleeping, resting, and learning for years to come.
