Rozelle

This project retains the original settler's cottage, preserving its character and memory. Rather than compete with the heritage fabric, the new addition is carefully composed as a respectful backdrop, its form, scale, and materiality drawn from the rhythm and simplicity of the existing cottage.

Reclaimed brick grounds the design in place, carrying a sense of permanence and history, while the contemporary upper form sits lightly above, gently folded and sculpted to acknowledge the past without imitating it. Together, the old and the new create a layered story: one that honours early settlement history while providing a home shaped for contemporary living.

A modest intervention, crafted to feel as though it has always belonged.

Set on a 220 m² site within a heritage conservation area, the stair becomes a pivotal element of the design, not only for efficient use of space, but as a central sculptural piece incorporating a daybed and anchoring the internal layout. Flanked by natural light and integrated landscaping, it becomes an experiential moment within the home.
