corrimal street

This three-story luxury home design is located in Wollongong. The building was designed to fit within the context of medium density apartments. This site presents challenges to capture northern sun due to a large three-story duplex overshadowing from the north. Harnessing northern light was a crucial part of the planning and was resolved through locating living spaces centrally below light wells and voids.

The design integrates steel columns, fluid concrete forms, and an artful composition of materiality to enhance the lightness of concrete. The use of steel columns enables larger spans and open spaces, reducing the need for excessive concrete elements and creating an airy structure. The slim profiles of the slab edges add elegance and an illusion of lightness. The fluid forms break away from the rigid and heavy associations of concrete, imparting a sense of weightlessness and grace. This unique composition challenges the conventional perception of concrete as a heavy material, while ensuring structural stability and efficiency. It also enhances the aesthetic quality of the structure, improves space utilization, and promotes controlled natural lighting.

Privacy is a priority, and skylights above double-height living capture controlled natural light, reducing the reliance on artificial lighting and heating systems. The skylights also facilitate increased natural ventilation, minimizing the need for mechanical cooling systems and contributing to energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

To optimize space, second living areas and bedrooms are located on the higher levels, offering privacy amidst the bustling Corrimal Street. The basement car park accommodates eight spaces and two car hoists, providing ample room for the client’s vintage car collection and necessary maintenance.

The use of eco outdoors Wamberal freeform natural stone and off-form concrete ensures durability in harsh coastal conditions. The integration of fluid concrete forms, plants, and water creates a serene atmosphere. The addition of Shou Sugi Ban – Charred Timber Cladding not only provides a unique aesthetic to break the visual bulk but also offers durability and low maintenance, contributing to the building’s weathering appearance.

This luxury home design prioritizes sustainability and harmonizes with its surroundings, offering a serene retreat. Due to the lack of views, the design focuses inward, emphasizing privacy and creating a tranquil refuge for the occupants.
