Corrimal Street

This three-storey luxury home in Wollongong was designed to sit comfortably within a medium-density streetscape while creating a private and light-filled retreat for its occupants.

The site presented a major design challenge, with a large three-storey duplex to the north limiting access to natural sunlight. To resolve this, the main living areas were positioned centrally beneath carefully planned light wells and voids, allowing northern light to filter into the heart of the home.

Steel columns, fluid concrete forms, and a refined material palette give the home a strong architectural identity while reducing the visual heaviness often associated with concrete. Larger spans and open interior spaces are achieved through the use of steel structure, while slim slab edges create a sense of lightness and elegance.

The double-height living spaces are topped with skylights that bring controlled natural light into the home, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and supporting natural ventilation. These features improve comfort, energy efficiency, and environmental performance.

Privacy was a key priority. With limited external views, the design turns inward to create a calm, protected refuge from the activity of Corrimal Street. Upper levels accommodate additional living areas and bedrooms, giving the family separation, privacy, and flexibility.

The basement includes eight car spaces and two car hoists, providing generous storage and maintenance space for the client's vintage car collection.

Durable coastal materials were selected for longevity and character, including Eco Outdoor Wamberal freeform natural stone, off-form concrete, and Shou Sugi Ban charred timber cladding. These materials help break down the building's visual bulk while adding texture, warmth, and weather-resistant performance.

Through its use of light, materiality, structure, privacy, and sustainability, Corrimal Street creates a serene luxury home that responds intelligently to its urban and coastal Wollongong setting.
