Fairy Meadow Granny Flat Design

The concept for this Fairy Meadow granny flat was inspired by the coastal character of the local area, with a deliberate focus on capturing views of the mountains and maximising northern sun. The design was tailored to accommodate a close family member of the client, using space efficiently to deliver generous bedrooms, comfortable living areas and everyday ease.

A key design decision was to locate the stairs externally and position parking for the main dwelling below. This freed up valuable internal floor area for larger bedrooms and a more spacious living zone. Circulation was carefully planned throughout to ensure smooth, intuitive movement between all areas of the dwelling.

Circular and square cut-outs in the facade bring visual interest and create a considered play of light and shadow across the exterior. These architectural details allow natural light to filter into the interior, enhancing the ambience of every room.

James Hardie Linea Weatherboard Cladding was selected for the exterior. It connects with the character of neighbouring homes while offering durability and low maintenance — a practical and appropriate choice for a coastal environment.

The landscaping was designed with equal care. Driveway eco pavers maximise outdoor space and offer an environmentally conscious surface treatment. Australian native species, including Gymea Lilies, were chosen for their beauty, minimal maintenance requirements and strong connection to the local landscape.

The completed granny flat achieves the client's vision: a coastal-inspired secondary dwelling that maximises space, captures views and makes everyday living comfortable, functional and sustainable for a close family member.
